Comprising of three major areas – Varsity Acres, Varsity Village, and Varsity Estates – this Calgary neighborhood is found in the city’s northwestern quadrant and is bounded by the Crowchild Trail, the Bow River, and 32ND Avenue. Originally developed in the 1960s and early 1970s, the community was built on a plateau to the north of the Bow River valley. Primarily comprising of single-detached dwellings, the area is popular for its’ near location to the Bowmont Park Natural Area just as much as it is for its’ proximity to the University of Calgary.

With a population of over 12,000 residents, the Varsity neighborhood has a land mall of nearly 7 square kilometres. Varsity Acres is the oldest part of the neighborhood but soon saw company in its’ expansion of Varsity Village in the early 1970s which currently plays home to the Market Mall. Varsity Estates is the more upscale portion of the neighborhood and is popular for its’ access to the Silver Springs Golf & Country Club as well as the C-Train extension.

Public school students in the area attend Marion Carson elementary, F.E. Osborne junior high, and Sir Winston Churchill senior high school while Catholic school students attend St. Vincent elementary and junior high before graduating to St. Francis senior high school.

The area is popular for the wide variety of resources available to residents including the post-secondary University fo Calgary, the commercial shopping of Market Mall and Northland Village, the civic attractions of McMahon Stadium and Burns Stadium, and the green space offered from Nose Hill Park and the Bow River Valley. These along with the recreational activities put on by the area’s community association means that there’s never a lack of things to do in Varsity’s neck of the woods.

Calgary Transit has over two dozen stops set up throughout the community in order to accommodate residents no matter where they reside within the neighbourhood’s large land area.
