Closely bounded by the Sarcee Trail to the east, 17th avenue to the north, Glenmore Trail to the south, and the Springbank Hill neighborhood to the west, Signal Hill is one of Calgary’s more larger, wealthier and privileged communities. First established in 1986 and now with a population of just under 14,000 residents, the neighborhood has a median household income of $133,844. The wealthier residents of Signal Hill, at $200,000-$400,000 median household income, live in the upper parts of the area. The community is fortunate enough to have a # of amenities at its’ fingertips including a handful of shopping centres including the Westhills Towne Centre, the Signal Hills Centre, the Westmarket Square, and the Signature Park Plaza. Signal Hill also acts as the home of Battalion Park – what used to act as a military reserve prior to World War I for the Canadian Armed Forces. After officially opening to the public in 1991, it contains 16,000 stones hauled up the hill by soldiers and then arranged to form the numbers 137, 113, 151, and 51. These numbers correspond to the four battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who trained here before leaving to fight in the First World War.

Public school students of Signal Hill regularly attend Battalion Park elementary, A.E. junior high, and Ernest Manning senior high school. Catholic school students of the area also attend St. Andrew elementary, St. Gregory junior high, St. Michael junior high, and Bishop Carroll senior high school.

Amenities are far too plentiful to list in their entirety but there are a few standouts that haven’t been mentioned here yet.

The Signal Hill Centre contains a large public library which not only serves this community but bordering communities as well.

The neighborhood has the added benefit of being on a 7 km elevated plateau that stretches west. This offers breathtaking views of the mountains and particularly of the Elbow River Valley.

For those that like the downtown Calgary lifestyle but don’t have a vehicle to get there, Calgary Transit has about two dozen stops all throughout the neighborhood to accommodate residents.

Signal Hill is an excellent example of what a modern, elegant, and exclusive community is – from top to bottom, there’s not a need that the neighborhood cannot meet.
